Curator’s Message
Collectible Design refers to contemporary or modern pieces that are sought after by collectors as well as museums or design centres in around the world. The term “collectible design” first started gaining widespread usage in the 1990s, though the concept of collecting and valuing functional design objects as art. Over the years, Collectible Design has emerged as an increasingly popular and handsome approach to collecting and investing. The value of collectible design is largely based on the designer’s reputation, the item’s condition, scarcity and exclusivity, artistic and aesthetic values, and its perceived future value as an investment.
This beautiful Collectible Design Pavilion showcases a selection of outstanding collectible design items from Hong Kong, Mainland China and cities around Asia. The work on display aims to celebrate the magnificent blend of great design minds of designers and exquisite skills of artisans, exemplifying the perfect marriage of design and art in a contemporary context and reflecting relevant cultures. It is our aim to introduce our friends and partners who have worked so hard and contributed greatly to this arena. By paying homage to the designers and artisans, we hope to epitomise on the idea of how collectible design can create a whole new playground for designers and artisans to work more closely together in Asian cities with such rich culture. It is our desire to also raise awareness for collectible designs as objects in our everyday lives that allows us to admire and enjoy, as well as to promote recognition of design as a distinct category within the broader art and collectibles market.
